How long have you worked with Polk Works: Since 2002

How has your role changed at Polk Works over the years? 2002-04: Assistant director of Polk Works Workforce 2020 (Business Services Division). 2004-06: Program director of Polk Works Workforce 2020 (Promotion). 2006: Promoted to president and CEO of Polk Works

What responsibilities does your job entail? Serve as one of 24 regional Workforce Board CEOs in the state of Florida, leading a workforce system consisting of two full-service One-Stop Career Centers, a Mobile One-Stop Unit, an administrative office, a Young Leaders division and an Employer Services division within the fourth-largest county in land mass in Florida.

Why is your work meaningful to you? Workforce development is meaningful to me because of the impact it has not only on the individuals we assist, but on their families and their ability to develop skills that will help them to become self sufficient. In workforce development, we create opportunities for professional growth and development of an individual that may not otherwise exist.

How do you feel you make a difference in East Polk County? Collaborating with various economic development and education partners to ensure that jobs are created and that our residents are truly prepared for current and future jobs makes a tremendous difference in the ability of our community to thrive. While we've seen East Polk grow over the last several years, there is still a great deal more to accomplish. Working to ensure that all of the members of our community have opportunities to advance is critically important. Through the provision of workforce services, we touch the lives of people from all walks of life. There is no greater satisfaction than to know that you have assisted someone in their development, thereby enhancing their ability to provide for their families.

What do you enjoy most about East Polk County? The greatest asset of East Polk County is the commitment and dedication of its members to maintain a strong community and family atmosphere. It is evident that the residents and community leaders of East Polk have a genuine desire to promote growth, enhance educational opportunities and retain the young professionals. Any community with a strong commitment such as this is bound to be successful in creating a solid foundation upon which their kids and grandkids can and will prosper.

What challenges have you faced throughout your career, and how have you overcome them? The greatest challenge that I have faced consistently throughout my career has been the need to constantly remind others of my strong conviction to be ethical, moral and professional in all of my endeavors, regardless of the risk of losing friends, colleagues or positions.

What goals do you have, professionally and personally? I hope to pursue a doctorate degree and advance in my career in whatever way would allow me to have a greater impact on the community I serve. And, I strive to make it evident to my children that I want to give back to my community so that the opportunities for them will be even greater.
